Removable or Fixed Implant Dentures

If you have missing or damaged teeth, you can have them restored with the help of implant dentures. There are two main options of implant dentures: Fixed and Removable Implant Dentures.

Fixed implant dentures restore natural function to almost 100%. They require a solid foundation of at least five implants posts per jaw. Once the dentures are attached to the posts, you’ll always wear them just like natural teeth.

Removable implant dentures, on the other hand, are attached directly to traditional implants or an implant-supported bar. However, you’ll need to remove them regularly to clean them just like conventional dentures.

There are few factors to consider when choosing between removable implant dentures and their fixed counterparts.

Number of teeth missing

If you are missing one tooth or a few teeth, fixed implant dentures would be an ideal option. If you are missing all of your teeth on one or both arches, you would be better off with the removable option.

The amount of tissue and bone support available

If you have adequate bone and tissue support, fixed implant dentures will work well for you. If you lack bone volume, a removable option would be ideal for you. Effective implant placement requires sufficient bone density.

Ease of cleaning and maintenance

You also need to consider the oral hygiene procedures required to maintain each option. Generally, a removable implant denture is easier to clean compared to its fixed counterpart. With fixed implant dentures, you may need to invest in particular floss thread or interproximal brushes to ensure you thoroughly clean all the nooks and crevices.

Personal preference

If you’ve been wearing a conventional denture for a while, you may be more comfortable with removable implant dentures. Likewise, if you don’t fancy the idea of having to remove your teeth, you would be more pleased with the fixed option.

The costs involved

Given that fixed implant dentures require more implant posts, they usually are more expensive than the removable option. So, you will have to choose what suits your budget and needs. Your dentist will also advise you on the best option depending on your general dental health.
